Bakery Expanding Pennsylvania Headquarters for 10th Time

By: Mike Hockett, Thomasnet.com

One of the U.S.’s largest bakeries is expanding at its headquarters in southern Pennsylvania in its 10th such project.

Martin’s Famous Pastry Shoppe announced Dec. 3 that it broke ground on an expansion that will add a new bakery production line and about 260,000 square feet of space, along with a 16,000 square foot cold dock, to its current Chambersburg facility.

The company — which makes a variety of products under its Martin’s brand, including burger and hot dog buns, dinner rolls, and breads — said the latest expansion comes after “significant” growth in its fresh retail and frozen international businesses over the past two years.

Like many manufacturers of at-home consumer food staples, Martin’s benefited from increased demand initially spurred by COVID-19 lockdowns and more people eating at home.

Martin’s added that it has also grown due to the 2017 expansion of its Valdosta, Georgia, bakery, which prompted the need for more space. The new cold-dock area will be used to stage frozen products for export to third-party international distributors.

Martin’s was founded in 1955 out of the Martin family’s one-car garage. It opened its Chambersburg commercial bakery in 1978, and the Valdosta bakery in 2008. Meanwhile, it has continued to expand its distribution reach nationwide and launched a refurbished website in February 2021.
